UEFA talks about EURO 2012 qualifying draw

Platini and Blatter

Football team of Russia and Georgia, and Armenia and Azerbaijan, will not play in the same group of EURO 2012 qualifying.

European Football Federation (UEFA) announced this information on Saturday, a day before EURO 2012 qualifying group draw which will take place on February 7.

Russia and Georgia were in a short war in August 2008.

Armenia and Azerbaijan don’t have diplomatic relations because of the long-term disputes. This two teams were in the same qualifying group for EURO in Austria and Switzerland, but refused to play two mutual matches. Michel Platini then said it is was wrong to connect this two teams in the same group, and announced that such cases should try to avoid.

Armenia and Azerbaijan are in the conflict because of the province of Nagorno-Karabakh, which lies within Azerbaijan’s territory but controlled by local separatists and Armenian military since 1994.
